Hey everyone, I'm debating an 07 (maybe 06). What I've read on other forums has suggested the OR mostly. Being rather new to offroading and suv's in general I'm not sure I need it. Most would say get it anyway if you plan to keep your car you will want it down the line.

Most of the extras on the SE seem like they can be added later in aftermarket parts for cheaper (fogs, stereo, step rails, etc.). Some things on the OR cant such as the locking rear differential.

My concerns at this point are:

1. Price : the S model would probably be a good affordable and potentially upgradeable part time offroader and solid daily/bad weather driver... i dont want to go over $25k total OTD, I think an 06 OR can be done within this, definately an 06/07 S

2. Ride quality: I'm worried the OR will be too stiff on the bad streets I drive around my city on... everyone has their own view on stiff suspension though i guess :D

My 06 S has been treeting me well, and up until recently our streets in town have been horrible thanx to the highway and ww departments decidig to replace our pipes and do a horrible job at fixing the roads. They were recently re-paived but it took them all summer and up until now! It really rides true, and the bumps and pot-holes that we get around here in winter don't bother my ride. The OR might be a bit stiffer, but i wouldnt mind that in concideration of my own ride.

And food for thought. I got my 06 S from a dealership that had it as a demo. 20k flat, fully loaded for an S, and only 2800mi at the time :)

Well, You'll get as many opinions as answers with this one. Here's mine.
I Bought an S and I do not regret it in the least. I don't like electric lockers so I hoped for an ARB Air to come out for it and I'd go F&R matching. BUT the X is so good Off Road as is, I don't see the need. I have a winch and have yet to use it. So I vote go with the S model best bang for your buck especially if you intend to add your own stereo wheels and all that extra stuff you'd take off anyways.

The ride, Most people complain about the rear bottoming out, it does, but you can cure that with the timbren rear mod. http://thenewx.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=452
I think all X's need it no matter what. Nissan needs to recall the weak rear springs and do a new spring pack. If they do, luck is Timbren mod will still complement that.

So, go S intend to do a timbren mod takes 30 Min and $150 and you will be all set until you catch the Godfather Fever and do all sorts of stuff found here at this site with no flames.

The front is to your left (Avatar) and this is the END. 2005 S with 25K miles and many Mods. MC

My s is auto with OD and 4x4 the local club is in Western PA. WPAXC.com Buy the OR if you want, I don't suggest it unless in 07 they fixed the seat cover issue and you like the stuff the factory gives you.
I took off almost everything that would have came on an OR model. So it would have been a bad deal for me, all I would have got would be a Locker and VDC after all said and done.

really...the locker is the only reason to go for the OR. nicer shocks...but if you lift you replace those. i like the wheels..(whooptie do...) and the stock skids suck. i ended up giving mine away. and i replaced the tires quickly after buying the truck.

the locker is nice.

as for the ride, its the shocks...and i didn't think it was any rougher, but test drive them.

the seat covers? i thought all the wear issues were on the Non-OR models? the OR seat covers are really rough, but don't show wear at all.

As for VDC...i'm pretty sure its standard on all 'S' models and up now.

I ended up with a really good deal on the OR. ended up being less than the S at a neighboring dealership.

I bought an S cause it is probably all I will ever need. But who knows, down the road I might be wishing I had the locker, but hopefully if that is the case their will be an after market one.

When I was looking, I noticed that the 07's are coming in bit more expensive and there probably won't be any rebates on them right off. So if you are in the market now I would try and find an 06.

i'm agreeing on the S here. If you can get an 06 OR for a great deal (under 25k) i'd say go for it. The locker is the only make or brake option and unless you're into more serious offroading it's not really needed... the guys with "S" models have been doing fine offroad.

yea the S does seem like the best overall value... i wonder if an 06 S can be done fore 20-22k...guess it depends how desperate they are but i know theres the 1k cashback going on now too...

i think any offroading i may potentially do can be satisfied with the S, i could always add the shocks down the line but im thinking i wont be able to tell the difference between having the locker and not having it... im looking at guys offroading in like 88 pathfinders and thinking maybe id be spoiling myself by getting all these features i probably wont take full advantage of anyway...

you can definitely find an S for that price... i got mine for 22.2k(invoice price) in Dec last year with no incentives just a bit of haggling.
You'll be replacing(or wanting to) the shocks as soon as you start any mods anyway so go for it.

Best bang for buck...

Yet another opinion to add to the bunch. Ya know what they say about opinions :blackeye:

Well, I think the X model is the best bang for the buck for me. The biggest difference between the X and S are steel/aluminum wheels, 8-way adjustable driver seat, and body side molding (Edit: and power package). I don't mind the steel wheels (can't see um when you're driving anyway), the adjustable seat was a mute point, and I bought the body side molding for $60 and installed it myself (Edit: purchased power package). A lot of money left over for the skidplates, rock sliders, hitch, and side molding in my opinion. I'll change the tires when I either get annoyed with the stock ones or wear them out. A nice aggressive tire will offset the look of steel wheels then if it's a big concern.
If you like the aluminum wheels I'd go for the S model or limited aftermarket wheels on the X model (Edit: with power package). The X model does have the VDC and ABLS (ABS operated limited slip) in '06 which is still a step above a basic 4x4.

Edit: X model with Power Package I bought was ~$2k less than a comparably equiped S model with the differences stated above.

The S also comes with the Power package which means crusie control which was a must have for me.

I got my S for 22705k. It had the tow package, body molding, rear cargo cover, in cabin filter and both sets of floor mats and the splash guards (whoopie). I pitted dealership against dealership within a 100 mile radius and that was the best offer I got, all the other offers were above 23k.

Take off the extras and yes it would be under 22k easily. I haggled with people for 2 weeks before getting the price down to what I got but the market up here seems to be good and there were only 3 06's left with a MT around.

Oops...

Yeah, I forgot about the Power Package.

When I purchase a couple months ago the X I recieved had the Power Package and ran about $2k less than a comparably equiped S model. That's a lot for wheels, adjustable seat, and body side moldings. Sorry for not clarifying the Power Package in the first post.

If you plan on wheeling (a lot), I would suggest the OR just for the locker. It might not always be needed, but when it is, it's nice to have. It's worth the about $2k more for the offroad over the S model.

That being said, so far what everyone is saying about things that will be repalced is totally true.

id like to also get fog lights put in aftermarket.. i think this is probably a lot cheaper than getting them from dealer, anyone have rough price estimates? thanks.
http://thenewx.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=68&highlight=fog+lamps

Steve, go to above link that guy did a bang up job of a write up how to on factory fog lamps, then visit our outstanding vendor Nissan of Turnersville for a ban up price on a factory fog lamp kit that has everything you need to install fog lamps in like 30 minutes. about $200. So don't sweat the fog lamps.

Also, I thought it was the OR model only on the seat covers, I stand corrected it seems. But I still think the extra 2K for OR is way too much for the locker when it will keep you going in some stuff, a $500 winch will get you out of anything. (But only if you plan on Shrockworks bumper someday.) I've had my S through about everything, I've never been stuck.

Now, just go out and beat up some dealers and let us know how you make out. Shop the net, some dealers will give you better price that way. But you area is about the best shopping area around.

Check your mail.
