Auto tranny complaints

I'm wondering if others are having similar issues...

First, since day 1, I've noticed that the X has a 'clunk' when you let off the gas while driving normally, but I seem to notice it most around 40mph I think. It's pretty audible, but very noticable. I think it is the tranny in OD, then when you let off the gas, it is 'clunking' because it is in too high a gear. Anybody else notice this? It seems to go away with OD off, but haven't played with it enough to be positive of that (it's the wife's daily driver).

Second, I was having some issues with turning the OD on and off this weekend. I noticed that when allowing the engine to rev up/engine braking while going downhill in 4th, then shifting back to OD, it would either not want to go, or once it thought it was in OD already (was in 4th on the dash display with the 'O/D OFF' light on), then when I turned OD back on, it dropped it into 4th (O/D light off, dash display in D). I played with it a couples times, and got it to work finally, but it certainly isn't right. Also, noticed when I was later down the road (hour or so later), it was revving high like it was in 4th, but was still in OD mode (tranny was obviously physically in 4th)... this was a flat road, so it wasn't down-shifting for power. I either played with the OD and got it to shift back, or it straightened out (don't remember).

Wife told me to stop fooling with the OD, but it shouldn't be doing anything but selecting a different gear... I shouldn't have to not use an option on a new vehicle.

Anybody experienced similar issues? Kinda frustrating on a brand new rig. ~Steve

I have never felt anything like that. I would definitely take it to the dealer
Yea mine works as advertised. No noises, no problems, all I could ever ask out of an Auto. MC
X3 My juice tranny is the smoothist shifting one I have ever had.

Definately have the dealer check it.

No problems, and I do the same with OD when going down a hill.
Have you checked the fluid level? That might be the cause and would save you a trip to the dealer.
My 2007 has the same clunk right around 40 mph, other than that, it's the best operating tranny I've ever driven.

Wow, seems like it might really be an issue. I was never worried about it since I figured it was just a little 'confused' when you were going slower and it was just in too high a gear. The OD issue this weekend really got me wondering, though. Guess I'll check the fluid and try to take it in soon. Problem with dealers, though, is that you have to recreate the problem; shouldn't be an issue with the 'clunk', but the downhill/OD issue is very intermittent.

Thanks for the replies. Like I said, I just figured it was Nissan's quirks. ~Steve
lube the slip yoke splines on the front of the rear driveshaft (the one going into the back of the trans-yes, you have to take it off) before you start thinking bad trans. use synthetic grease on the splines. it's getting stuck briefly before moving to and fro during load and unload. the rear squats up and down when you get on power and the rear driveshaft has to shorten and lengthen a little bit on the splines.
now you're getting me worried. i get the same 'clunk' under 40 mph as well. basically once i take off and release the gas, i can hear the clunk and almost feel it... i guess i'll take it in for a check up just to be safe.......

let us know what the dealer says in your case.

Sound like so far to be a possible 2007 model problem.

doesn't the 2007 model come with Nissan's new infinite gear ratios transmission?
Nope, still the five speed auto. The CVT is, for now, FWD/AWD only.
My 06 Fronty has the same noise. It is only when the torque converter is locked up. Many other cars have a similar issue. It is caused by the lack of slop in the drivetrain. Manual trans cars and trucks with unsprung hubs in the clutch disc and a solid flywheel (ie none dual mass) will do the same thing.

I get the same thing on my '07 S - I can't tell from super6turbo4's post if it's something to be worried about. Please advise!
auto trans and no trouble here.

wonder what kind of changes they made in the auto tranny?
'07 AT, quiet as can be. Only 900 miles on it. Shifts great and quiet, no 40mph clunk.
Yeah mine has done this to. I'm not to worried about it though, I figure if the tranny goes out they can replace it. Thats why I sprung for the 100,000 mile/6 year warranty. the thing will still be warrantied even after its paid off.
