APEX Designs Sway Bar Disconnects

It was brought to my attention recently that a company called Apex Designs just released a "disconnecting" sway bar end-link for Toyota IFS. It's a pretty neat concept.

I'm intrigued by whether or not this design is possible on T-swapped X. My gut tells me it isn't, based on how the sway bar is kind of "trapped" between the LCA and the tie rod, which leaves very little room for for the end of the sway bar to move around.

But, maybe it's worth a look.

Maybe. I also know a lot of T Swap guys don’t have sway bars. I’m not even swapped and don’t have sway bars

I kept the front but have had the rear off since my rear axle swap

And I just put my rear one back on. LOL A couple of YT videos convinced me that things seem to work better with the rear bar installed.

For daily driving I guess so, but the axle flexes differently when off-roading with the sway bar off. I happened to be behind an X without sway bar on a trail, and the flexion is different.

I was just thinking about this driving home yesterday. I'd really like to figure out a cleaver way to get a disconnect to work. Even if I have to fab something up it would be worth it.

Indeed.

I'm just afraid there isn't enough room.
Toyotas have the benefit of the sway bar attaching high on the knuckle. Plenty of clearance. Xterras, not so much.

How often do you hit trails?
Reason I ask is to see if it benefits more to just leave rear sway off completely. I’ve had mine off for a few months and haven’t really seen a difference with Daily driving. But an improvement on trails. but I hit dirt about once a week Soo….

I haven't had a rear sway bar in a very long time.

This product is specific to the front.
(I figured that was implied due to mentioning "IFS", "T-swapping", "LCA", and "Tie-rod" in the OP ;) )

Even if you can disconnect the front somehow, the swaybar is still in a weird spot because of that low attachment. If you have an off-road bumper (with high-clearance tire cutouts) and approach an obstacle, the swaybar is in FRONT of the tire, and will likely hit a ledge or rock or whatever before the tire can.

Right, but have you looked at how the Apex product works?
It's not a true "disconnect" like has been hashed out around here several times.

When the Apex product is "disconnected", it just lets the end of the sway bar float around on the link. You don't have to rotate the bar out of the way.

Im pretty sure with the placement of our sway bar mounts on the LCA, this would not work without interfering with the steering links. There no room to freely slide up.

Ive pondered welding sway bar mounts to the titan LCA that are set inward to match the xterra sway bar width and run it. The idea being that the sway bar would be derated by the added leverage and provide some but not all anti sway.

Ive also pondered setting up a custom solution with something like the Atirock universal kits by rockjock4x4. Then you could potentially relocate the sway bar mount and actually run a quick disconnect like the one posted here.
