I have an 06 that has been used VERY little since getting an AWD Astro van. I set up the Astro for van camping and use it a lot but would like to do the same with the X-terra. I'm just not sure it's even possible. Maybe someone has figured it.. Some places down here I think the X-terra would be the better off road vehicle at the expense of sleeping comfort. At 6ft, I think any solution in the X is probably going to be pretty cramped. Van is fairly capable (lifted, rear locker, E rated TA's and such) but it still has too much wheel base for some places I want to get into. Any thought's on sleeping IN an X-terra appreciated.

Its a long thread but worth skimming through, also post what you end up doing there.. It's got some simple air mattress stuff, screens for windows, privacy curtains, ways to level the back and provide storage etc..

Also try going to advanced search and typing in "sleeping" as a keyword, then select the interior forum and click search. It brought up several threads you might find interesting the below is the result of doing that search.

I'm 6'0 and plenty comfy.

Heres my current set up with the 8-Gal Atcion Packers and Mobile one 6-packs to illustrate, but a Coleman 6L cooler is also a perfect flat fit:

I did a 10,000 mi 8 week offroad/on road trip all the way across the US and Canada, basically living in the X (link in my signature) I bought THIS queen size memory foam mattress topper for $75 on Amazon and I cut it to the perfect shape for the Xterra. I then bought THIS futon mattress cover for $38 on Amazon to put the mattress in so its clean and comfy. I swear it is more comfortable then my own bed is! Love it! The rack allows storage above your feet for gear, so it can be in the X while you sleep, and you still have room. More info in my build thread (also a link in my sig).

I've used the Action Packer trick described in one of the linked threads, with great success ... especially for solo use (I'm 6'4", 190# ... so not tiny). For two it might get tight, but could be made to work if you like your camping partner ... certainly no worse than a backpacking tent.

Thanks for those. Some good stuff in there. I might even be able to use my matt from the Astro. Looks like there is room. Wish I had the fold flat front seat. I'd even considered just removing the front seat since I always go solo. If the wife goes, she insists on taking the Casita camper. I go on plenty of photo junkets on my own though.

Action packer trick with a comfy camping mat works great for me. 6'3" a little cozy in there with 2 people and a medium size dog but doable. Great in spring fall and winter with proper gear. Summer can get a little hot unless you have the hatch open. That has been my experience anyway.

I'm 6' tall also and kinda felt it is almost impossible to sleep in the Xterra and be able to stretch out completely...

I plan to get mine with leather interior so I think I may be out of luck.

Well done! I didn't realize what a good fit those action packers were.

And for a short trip (2-3 nights) I've found that my narrow thermarest and sleeping bag work just fine - no need for the mattress pads. I'll only pull and fold down one half of the back seat and leave the other up. Works great for me as long as you use the action packer or something similar to add some space for your head to rest on.

Surf, why do you carry 2 oil changes worth of oil with you?

I like the look of those action packers as well. Do the seats have to be forward for them to fit? At 6'4" I need the seat back and assume I'd have to take them out when driving.

Yes, you would definitely have to take the out to drive. The seats have to be almost all the way forward.

The 8 gal action packers are very nice. I don't really like the bigger ones though
