Is there a reason no one seems to do wrap-around rear bumpers similar to what the 4runner/tacoma guys run, and ditch this plastic?

Is there a reason no one seems to do wrap-around rear bumpers similar to what the 4runner/tacoma guys run, and ditch this plastic?
Mostly for reasons of flex - there's nothing to support the bumper on the sides, so a good impact will cause it to bend into the body. The way the X is constructed, the bumper wings will simply pivot around the frame ends, and even if you built extended members from the frame ends all the force would be transferred that way. You'd have to run a support through the body for proper bracing.

I think the tacoma/4runner guys have to do that as well, at least the tacoma guys do, and they cut the fender to fit the bumper with the wraparound protection too.
