So, been noticing this whole add-a-leaf thing a lot recently. Is this a suspension lift method? Or just an improvement to the suspension already there?

It's a means to lift a leaf sprung vehicle. Basically all it does is add additional leaves to your spring pack causing lift. These leaves usually have more of an arc to them than the stock leaves.

So by installing a AAL I could essentially raise my ride w/o neccessarily having to buy a lift kit? Or would it just raise the rear, where the leaf springs are?

It will only lift the rear. And an AAL IS a lift kit for leaf springs.

There are really three ways to lift a leaf sprung vehicle.

Shackles
Add-A-Leaf
Blocks (these will only work on axle under leaf setups...the Xterra is axle over).

It will just raise the rear. The name of the game here, is "arc". The more arc the pack has, the more lift you will receive. However, too much arc will result in very little suspension travel and stiff ride.

I read a lot, and only talk when I have something to say or can't find it in a previous post. It is amazing how much information there is on these if you just use SEARCH. I actually work at keeping my post count down.
