Hello all,
Im fairly new to this community and this may have been answer already, but I'm looking to throw a set of 33.3" 295/70/17 tires on my 2008 Xterra SE and I have a couple questions regarding it.

-Do I need to re-gear?
-Can I put these 33.3" (295/70/17) tires on and off-road (Incline & Decline gravel trails with a f**k ton of potholes) well, while using a 2 Inch Lift in the front and rear?
-Would it be better to run 32.7" (285/70/17) for off-roading and would it still look good?
-Do I need to run a 3" lift instead?

I have 285/75/16 Falken Wildpeaks and the OME kit on my Xterra, and I think it looks pretty good. It does rub slightly at full lock without a melt mod in the front. In the rear, under full compression, the tire will very lightly rub the frame as well. My Xterra is a 6-speed, so I think I have a bit steeper gearing than you do. I think the truck still feels alright driving around town, but it is noticeably less peppy than on the stock tires, whether that's weight or diameter.

285s with a leveling kit and add-a-leaf in the back pretty much fills the wheel well. No rub in every day life and haven't noticed anything when wheeling either, bet probably never got her to full flex.

I do not know if the tires will fit well. I had to do the melt mod to get 285/75R16 to fit on my stock S model. After lifting it the tires started to contact the frame in the rear and the inside upper portion of the fender liner upfront due to increased travel of the new suspension. I am using OEM wheels. I imagine the rubbing would be worse with a slightly larger tire.

That said, $61 per tire difference seems like a hell of a lot for 5k more miles and half an inch larger diameter. My 2012 S model has the 6 MT so gearing should be 3.54 (iirc) and I could use better gearing. I think 3.13 would be really pushing it but many here have the 285 tires with stock gearing for autos.

285 AT3 / OME suspension is an excellent combo in my opinion. It's what I have on our '06 Off Road.

It's closer to a 1.5" lift, but it's a big improvement in performance, not just height.

On a forum with this many years and posts it's a pretty safe bet that almost any tire fitment or choice question you can think of has been asked before, but they're not always easy to find. Here's a couple threads with 295/70/17's and SE's mentioned:

295/75/16 or 285/75/16 Tire Size Options

I'd suggest getting the AT3 XLT (or other good LT all terrain tire of your choice) in the 285 width. I have had the original AT3's (same tire you're considering, but with plainer looking sidewalls) since 2015 and I've been happy with them.

Pros to 295's:
You'll have .25" more ground clearance.

Cons to 295's:
Heavier (increased braking distance, increased wear)
More expensive (comparing AT3 to AT3 in these sizes)
Even worse gearing than what you'll have going to 285
Reduced MPG
More likely to rub
Will it fit in the stock spare location? I know the 285 will, but just barely.

After saying all that... I have 32" tires (265/75/16) on my '09 Off Road with the same OME suspension setup, and it has no trouble going where the '06 goes. It "looks good" with that size tire, though that's subjective. It also has better braking and acceleration, and slightly better MPG, and therefore longer range.

Summary: IMO there's not much compelling reason to go bigger than 33" without much more extensive mods, and there may be some good reasons not to.

285 is a better fit, but if you really, really want 295s you can trim stuff to make it work and live with some rubbing.

You don't need to regear but driving is not gonna be pleasant on mountain highway roads. You have 3.13 gearing. With my former 3.36 gearing and 285/75/R16 slightly smaller tire size it was painful going up some mountain passes and getting stuck in 3rd gear. Plenty of people do it though.

Since 295/70/R17 is a little taller than the typical 33" tire, you may have to consider this: How-to: EASY Fender Trim for 33's + Wheel Spacers

Honestly though, I would wait to trim until after the tires are on. Different alignments mean different fitments of tires.
