Sacrilege

Good morning,

So I'm at work at the moment and my X is parked in the parking garage so I apologize for the simplicity of this question. However, I have a question that has been bugging me for a while.

Now while it is fairly common place that the first modification X drivers do is to remove the stock mud-flaps...I'd like to keep mine on until I decide to lift it. That being said, I've noticed that for some reason two of three of the stock plastic...I don't know what one would call them...the plastic pins that hold the mud flaps on the fender...they are not fully pressed in any longer and appear to be only partially "in".

Now every plastic pin I've ever come in contact with on previous vehicles are usually complete trash and are basically one-timers that are extremely brittle. In other words...they don't last long and are simply a way to save upfront costs for the manufacturer.

My question is...does anyone have any experience with "re-pressing" these guys "in"...or should I plan on these guys breaking and then plan on having to shell out like $50 from Nissan for them.

Again. I apologize for this silly question. Happy Friday.

I don't know. I don't know if anyone here has ever kept the flaps on.

Iirc, they held up alright on my 2012 in CO, well the ones still there. I think I had a few missing when I removed them. I wouldn't bother buying more clips if you are just going to remove them down the line. Or look for alternative sources for clips.

The fasteners are plastic rivets. Here's a 120 piece set of different fastener sizes for $7! IIRC from taking mine off, once set that little button popping out doesn't loosen the rivet, can be pushed back in (might work its way back out), and they were a bitch to get out!

These press clips are pretty universally used around the X (like on front grill parts) and can be replaced cheaply at Nissan or you can probably find them online. Just make sure the plastic parts you're pushing them through are pressed together so the thickness is correct for the clip. Then squeeze the shoulder down tightly against them, then the middle part should press in and snap in place. To remove just work backward, pry gently with flathead around the middle, pull that out an 1/8" or so and then pull the whole clip out. True you might break one of the four plastic tabs on the clip but it'll usually still work with only 3.

Here are a couple pictures of different sizes you'll find on the vehicle.

Like other responses, you'll probably end up removing the flaps. Just waiting to get messed up on rock or snow and ice.

AutoZone also carries clips in packs of 4 I think? Relatively cheap from what I remember

Autozone sells them in their fastener section, they have a pretty big collection of screws, clips, and pins for all the makes now for around 4 or 5 bucks.

I say leave it alone until they fall off. Then just leave them off. This is a "free" solution.
