Hawk's Wild Blue Yonder Xterra

Intro Comments: Well hello there, My name is Shane and this the build thread for my Xterra. I'm located in Illinois just across the Mississippi river from Davenport Iowa. I'm an engineer and an eagle scout so any "build" is going to focused around reliability and usefulness. My wife also has a Black 2011 Xterra that will either receive my hand me down mods or be modded at the same time so rather than start two threads I will randomly be hijacking my own build thread with wifey mods.

Stopped after work today and grabbed a photo at an old shut down school by my house:

Well Wild Blue Yonder got some more love this weekend! I got the wiring in for the hitch last week but didnt have the time or the correct diameter hole saw to properly mount the plug. Well Thursday night the misses and I stopped by home depot and grabbed a 2-3/8" hole saw and last night (04/03/2017) was install time!

This is what I called the point of no return:

And after a relativity simple install this is the final result:

I also received the in channel window vents on friday but had to wait until Sunday to pick up the extra 3M double sided tape to properly install them.

Edit (5/1/2017):
Got some red LEDs in a week or 2 ago after seeing something on here and installed one in the passenger map light:

Also took some measurements of the rear cargo / trunk area to see if I could design a custom fit dog cage for back there Pictures for future reference (all in cm):

Also thanks to this forum I was finally able to replace the factory first aid kit that never came with my truck pack is a voodoo tactical med pouch:

Edit 5/10/2017
Well this past weekend we loaded up the wife's Xterra and visited my folks a few hundred miles away. When I say loaded I mean 4 dogs, 2 crates, 2 people and gear and dog food for 3 days as well as anything we needed for search and rescue training.

This was the view through the back seat while gassing up to head out of town:

This was search practice with the Yakima rocket box for gear:

And finally back home reunited with the wild blue yonder:

Update: 5/15/2017
Got a little time this weekend and started on a drop in basket for my truck until I ran out of fluxcore wire for the welder:

Also finally got the step bars out of my garage and onto my wife's Xterra last night so that's another one to check off the list:

Next for her truck are some window vents and finish the LED map lights.

Edit Update 05/25/2017:
Well the basket is all done and mounted now just waiting to really put it to use.<- (Link to basket build thread can be found in the mod list in post 1.)

Edit update 06/07/2017:
The wife and I have been puting the new roof basket to use the last couple of weeks. First we took a trip to her family lake:

Then last week we tried fitting both kayaks on my Xterra and took a quick trip to Princeton IA

I also got bored and thought I'd see how a DeWalt tough box would fit up there

Update 06/08/2017 Got the 175# struts from McMaster on last night.
Struts x2 - 9416K79
Ball Ends x4 - 9416K147
And here are the results:

Welcome to the NewX, I chimed in on your garage journal build thread. Did you find the Curt hitch installed okay? Mine had a little problem lining up.

Thanks man! The hitch install itself went pretty well it would have been a lot easier with an extra person to pull down on the exhaust tip but after about 3 position changes, lots of swearing, some fancy moves utilizing knees, elbows, hands, and more swearing I had it all mounted up in maybe an hour or 2 start to finish. The wiring harness just showed up today so hopefully I can get that hooked up and mounted in the bumper tomorrow or this weekend.

Nice X! Diggin what looks like an old KDX? KLX? In the garage! Congrats on the new X too! The curt hitch was kind of a B to install for sure!

That's the same problem I had on mine. I used a ratchet strap to hold the exhaust tip audit was much easier. It was really simple otherwise and like you it only took about an hour and half. I will be interested to follow along with your build. I have similar ideas for mine. So far I have done 285/75/r16 ko2 and a daystar lift with a ARB fridge, I have a lot more on the want list but it's not in the cards yet. Looking forward to your updates.
