Are most Xterra Folks Soloists?

Granted my range is somewhat limited, but I make an effort to get out of the city on most weekends. But when my wife and I are rolling around the forest, we rarely see other Xterrras. When we hit the dirt, and see groups out doing their thing, it's just jeeps, fjs, and 4runners. Since I stick to myself and do most trips solo, I'm curious if there's a bunch of other X's in the PNW doing solo trips in the forests, beaches or deserts?
I understand the model is discontinued, but there's got to be some cult type people out there fixing these rigs up. But again most Xterras I see in town (Vancouver,WA) are driven by people with no intention of going off road, while theres a bunch of jeeps and toyotas that look ready for adventure.
So if you get out there in your X, post some pics and get some more activity on this forum. Maybe social media apps have rendered these forums useless? But I'm an older guy and even this forum **** cutting edge to me
Here's a couple pics from some sort of recent trips
#1 is somewhere in the Gifford Pinchot forest near Mt Adams
#2 On our way to to Klickitat, WA for a stay at Yurt Haven
#3 Snowshoeing at Yurt Haven

Feel free to just drop some photos of your X doing stuff in the PNW

Sorry they're sideways, I don't know why. This is why I don't do facebook
Here's the answer and then some; :D

I don’t know if the attachments went through or not, but I reattached them here if not.
Here is how I corrected your avatar photo and what AutoGuide says causes it;

Another issue, don't know why, but when you post some photos, even if right-side up on your end, they come out side-way on TNX;

Example: https://www.thenewx.org/forum/4217382-post26240.html

I've tried redoing it, but it comes back the same - side-ways :dontknow:

But, I have found a weird way around it to correct it, but it would be nice if we could get this corrected. It appears to only happen when your posting photos as an Attachments.

So what I have to do to get it right-side up is;

* Click on side-ways photo
* Copy to my CPU & correct to right-side up
* Upload copied photo to my facebook account
* Click on right-side up photo
* Copy back to my CPU
* Upload to facebook copied photo as the new Attachment
* And now it is posted as a right-side up photo

Now as you can see this is a PIA to do every time this happens... :D
This happens because the forum software is unable to read the EXIF data that is imprinted on the photo when you take it.

The EXIF data holds a lot of information, which includes orientation of your photo. Many programs are able to read this, and that is why you see it displayed upright in some places, but many others still are not.

This is a good article that explains all of this: https://www.howtogeek.com/254830/why-your-photos-dont-always-appear-correctly-rotated/

The gist of it is, the phones are designed to work like a digital camera. Holding your digital camera flat, in landscape, is the 'base line'. Developers used this 'base line' in the following way for mobile devices:

Apple users: hold your phone with your VOLUME buttons DOWN.

Android users: hold your phone with your HOME button to the RIGHT.

It's completely against common sense since the volume button is used as a shutter button, so you would think the volume button should point UP! But that is how developers worked it out, so when you hold your phone upright, in portrait, it is the same as turning your digital camera 90 degrees to the side, to take a portrait photo. Since the forum cannot read the data that tells it which way you are holding your phone, it displays plainly from the 'base line' - whichever side your volume buttons are on will be the bottom of your photo (so if you take a photo with your volume buttons facing UP on your phone, the photo will display upside down when you upload it here).

There is not currently any plugins or hacks that we've come across that can allow the forum to read the EXIF data at this time.

The only way around it is, either hold your phones the way the developers decided you should, OR you can open the photos in an Editing program (not the viewer), and save them in the correct orientation (you might need to rename them, and crop off a pixel or two, to make sure a change is recognized).

Hope that helps!

Getting Xterra owners together requires persistence on someones part.
I have been doing this in a 2005 Xterra for 14 years.
I have phone numbers that I text regularly to invite to events/trail runs.
I pester people, I cajole, I persuade to attend trail runs.

Same for getting ham quals for good comms.
Most people get excited when they first get their Xterra, then settle down and lose interest in getting other people involved.

It takes someone to ramrod these events, so asking why no one is doing it?
why aren't you doing it?

I bet most of those Jeeps you see on the road are never taken off road, or maybe on gravel. So many people these days have the gear but don't use it, or much less know how to use it.

The GF and I run about the Gifford, Mt. Hood, and Tillamook areas. I only recently got my X so the additions are slow coming. When we do we are usually solo. I think I've seen yours around actually.

A lot of truth in this statement, living in CO we have an abundance of mall crawler Rubicons, which used to frustrate me, these days I couldn't care less, knowing my Pro4x can out wheel 90% of the Rubicons on the road, not because it's the more capable machine, but because it has the more capable driver.

As a note to noobies in/around Norcal ...
Do not give your cell number to CHUSA, unless you want to:

- become an avid Scotch sampler
- became a Ham radio operator
- soak in hot springs
- frequently travel to distance offroad locales
- forfeit your T-shirt size, and brand names of your truck mods
- eat steak (that you prepare) on campouts
- have a backup (of any/everything)
- meet others who committed to the above

I'm in VA and I'm very much a soloist. No one in my area does this stuff anymore (except for the couple dumbass's who take old beater trucks and ram through huge mud holes and destroy the land which has lead to a HUGE amount of closures in my area -.- )

I like to explore and I've been known to stock up for a week and head out into the forests looking for a certain spot. It can get sketchy at times if you're new to this stuff but I'm also one of the more prepared people doing this type of stuff. I carry spare parts, full tools, impact, other misc things to fix stuff with, I have a winch and traction boards, ham radio etc. etc.

I should also note but other than the people I've meet on these organized trail runs (either from VAXC, NOAS or OverlandBound) I've never seen another built Xterra on the road and I'd say a good 90% of the drivers I see in the daily stockers are women.

Thanks for the photo posting tips.

The socialist comment makes me laugh, since I'm about the furthest from socialist, one can be.

Really appreciate the all the comments. It's nice to see some activity on this board instead of just instagram, facebook or whatever is the hip new **** I'm not down with.

As many elderly women I see tooling around town in used Xterras, with no understanding of the off road potential, it's nice to see some photos of local X's out doing their thing. Here's a couple shots from last summer (pre-duratracs), huckleberry picking up on Burley Mountain in the Gifford Pinchot.

One of my plans for this summer is to take my wife and kids up to Burley Mtn. I've been up there once, but it was years ago, and I'd like to go back. Took me a couple years to find out where it was, since I was shown the place by an old friend and forgot the name of the place, but someone recently made the connection for me.

And yes, I'm usually the only vehicle in my convoy.

I typically go solo.

i think there are several factors at play here, mainly there is waaayyy more jeeps on the road than xterra's. also, i'd bet that a higher % of jeep owners actually wheel them as compared to X's, id say more than half of the x's i see on the road have never been off the road, not on purpose at least... and there are more and more active jeep communities.

Xterra drivers that are the more adventurous type tend to be more willing to make their own way or go "solo" so to say..

I just recently got frustrated and started a meet n greet for X owners in my area, you might try the same.

Ya, I run solo mostly because it's a last second decision to go or I just don't plan far enough ahead. Made a couple friends at the Overland Rally so might try to organize some exploration trips near Castle Lake on Mt. St. Helens.

Someone posted Burley Mountain, you should definitely do it! Probably my second favorite peak you can drive to in the Gifford Pinchot. There are two ways up, one is pretty rough but fun, the other just a forest road. My .02 is to go up the rough one and come down the easy one.

@JuiceBanx and @sweetride2go, both you guys are in Vancouver, so there is the start of the local club. I am about an hour north of you in Lewis County. I am on Highway 12 on the way to Gifford. Add me to the list for the local club your starting.

The Pathfinder group I am part of is planning a trip this fall, I will keep you guys posted if your serious about going out. I just posted a trip to Tahuya for last Saturday and got no response. I bought this X with the purpose of having a single vehicle that would work as a daily and an off road, and so far have only been able to go solo because I can't find anyone to go with. Let's make this happen.

On a side note, I had the same experience with my old Pathfinder. I ended up going out with a Jeep club because I couldn't get enough interest in the Pathfinder group.

What generation of Pathfinder? I run a Hardbody that I have done some modifications to. It's been a long and interesting project.

As far as exploring, I've been wanting to explore the eastern area around St. Helens, especially around Castle Lake. Not even sure if you can get near it, but haven't explored that part of the forest at all. Nothing west of Merril Lake anyhow.

I know this is an older thread, but I'm in Bremerton, WA. And there are lots of Xterra's up here, but again a lot for show. I'm low income, but do my best to get out with my X, mostly solo. I am prepared for most anything with my X though. I'd love to find friend's to go with in my area!

I would really like to take out the Xterra.
I am in Florida right now and in an area mostly devoid of trails.
I like to stay mostly stock.
I belive as long as I stay out of extreme stuff my PRO4X shod with fresh AT tires should be sufficient.

Guess most of my Offroad capability is for emergency situations.
But I want to learn more about how to handle the car in these situations.
