That is the "Farm Jack"
I have one minus the base for free if someone local needs one.
I got it as part of the rescue efforts on the DV trip.
it belonged to Joe Fanaselle and I'm sure he would want it to go to a good home.

How long is that jack? And when you saw minus the base, do you mean the plate or the Accessory base for mud and sand? I'd be interested in that. Concord is a little too far from me. Let me know!

In the grand scheme of things, how good is this system?

Very good. It is a rugged unit with excellent power output. It uses a heat sink for cooling rather than a fan so there is one less thing to go wrong. It may not have all the bells and whistles that the more expensive dual band radios have, but it has everything you need for trail communications on the 2 meter band and for emergency use. [You won't miss having access to the 70cm band in California and Nevada - everyone uses 2 meter.]

If I were looking for an entry mobile Ham transceiver for an Xterra I wouldn't hesitate to pick a FT2900.

So that is $125 for used, this is $154 new, seems it might be worth the extra to get new.

Yaesu ft 2900R VHF Radio New FT2900 ft 2900 R | eBay

Actually, what is the unit I should look for if I only want to buy once and not have to upgrade later because i want more?
