Father/Son Rebuild Project

I've got a ton of stuff planned to do with the 2007 4x4 Xterra that I picked up at an auction.
It was not taken good care of and needs a LOT of work so I figured I'd start a project thread to put up what we have gotten done so far and what we have left to do.

Finished
Fixed the trunk latch "key still doesn't work but it will open now"
Installed the Cabin filters "they were missing" and fixed the cover.
Got a replacement First aid kit "Thanks Brunnie"

To-Do
Timing Chain replacement
  • New thermostat
  • new water pump
  • crankshaft oil seal
  • cooling fan clutch replacement "broken while engaged"
  • Replace radiator with KOYO A2807
  • replace tensioner as bearings are bad
  • clean throttle body
  • replace accessory belt
  • replace most hoses

Fluid Replacements
  • Drop Transmission pan, clean out and replace filter
  • Flush transmission fluid "dark red but not yet black"
  • Front Diff fluid
  • rear diff fluid
  • flush break fluid including from ABS Module
  • replace power steering fluid
  • oil change, possibly drop and clean out pan, but with 4x4 may be too difficult.

Upper Engine
  • Replace Valve covers, drivers side appears to be leaking a little
  • Change Sparkplugs
  • Inspect/replace hoses

Front Suspension
  • Wheel Bearings/hubs "Passenger side bad, doing both"
  • Check Engine mounts
  • Grease any available fittings

Rear Suspension
  • Replace both leaf springs "Driver side is broken"
  • Perform Evap Canister Cleanout while I'm back there
  • Remove Receiver hitch and back bumper, Grind/Prime/Paint/Reinstall
  • Grind any rust, prime, undercoat while everything is off back there

Body Rust
  • Rear hatch over window "not sure how to get it all out of there"
  • Hood has a bubble and a few pin holes
  • Over driver side back wheel
  • under both driver side doors
  • rain gutter above driver side

Misc
  • Replace muffler
  • Install backup camera
  • Get the Nissan Rogue remote key to work with this
  • Battery hold down is missing

Purchased from an auction and currently rebuilding with my Son 161k miles.

I got it for just under $2k which I thought was an amazing deal, but I'm estimating the parts alone are going to run me another 1 - 1.5k so it should still be a decent deal.

I had been looking on craigslist for a few months and I only see the 1st gen around that price range. 2nd gens are 5K+ around here.

AFAIK.... we don't have a filter in the tranny.

I might be wro...wrooo... incorrect though.

I’m pretty sure it’s just a metal screen. Nissan doesn’t replace them though, there’s an older thread on here about it. Also, when OP states EGR do you mean exhaust gas recirc? Or do you mean fuel evap canister I’m genuinely curious haha. Congrats on the project your son will learn a lot! I plan to do the same thing with my future son, hopefully on a fronty or an Xterra like you guys.

Garage
Do the rear diff breather extension mod while you're servicing the rear diff. Doing all this work will make the X much more special to you guys. Congrats

How many miles does it have on it? I have gotten 3 older 2nd gen Xterras between my son and I have have done almost everything on your list at least once. From the list, I would say $1K should do it. I got a muffler from a newer junked/wrecked X for $30 The only things from your list I did not have to do is the valve covers, engine mounts and rust, though I had the paint flaked in the rain gutter in one, masked it and sprayed in truck bed liner spray and replace a rear bumper due to a dent. Not sure how much you would gain dropping the Trans pan. The plug is a magnet, if you drain and fill, the plug can be cleaned to remove filings and there is no real replaceable filter. There is a lifetime screen in there that should never need replacing. Maybe keep the gasket intact and skip that.

I've watched a few YouTube videos of people dropping the tranny pan due to SMOD and there were some big magnets in there. though, if I'm going to do the flush and there isn't an actual filter, then maybe I won't need to do that after all. Less messing with fluids the better in my book.

I just looked at the paperwork and it's 161k miles... couldn't remember, and the battery is out so I couldn't check.

I've been checking and none of the "you pick" junkyards around here have any Xterras. Ohio is the closest I could find.

Your correct, its the evap canister. I've fixed it above. I'm planning on following this: how-to solve evap canister problem
