Paging CA, AZ, NV, and NM guys
There is an ongoing project that you guys may, or may not be interested in.
The project started out as www.expeditionutah.com, and has since grown into other Western states. The 'ExUt' forum and info found therein is unlike any other forum you've been on. It does not contain a 'for sale' section, or a 'chit chat'. It does not cover technical vehicle questions. The members must be actively adding info each year, as dormant members are purged each year. The forum is geared towards:
Quote:
Purpose: To provide a one-stop website for overland trekking in the state of Utah.
Members: ExpeditionUtah.com members will contribute their own trip reports, maps, research, etc to the database. These will in turn help others plan and research their own trips. We are not here to plan trips for others, rather give them some tools to do so themselves.
Info Sharing: ExpeditionUtah.com isn’t a place to “give away secrets”, rather to help others develop their own. For that reason the site isn’t viewable to non-members and some content is restricted to supporting members.

The CA, AZ, NV, & NM sites are not up and functional, yet. This is where you local guys who hit trails and document your trips could really help the sites get off the ground faster. There are 'beta' areas on expeditionutah.com designated to builing up the info for CA, NV, AZ, and NM before they launch to fully-functional-site status.
The main idea behind these sites are for a one-stop shop in gathering info to plan awesome trips. Check out expeditionutah.com and see what you can learn about the different areas, and add to the database your trips, knowledge, and experiences for others to benefit from. Plus, there are prizes to win if your trip reports are voted #1 by other members.

I've gone on record before as saying these sites (IE-youtreadtube) are bad for the OHV crowd, and our pasttimes.. It's detrimental to public lands to have trails posted online for public knowledge. That info's used to push legislation thorugh the senate which in turn closes down our favorite romping grounds. Utah has seen a lot of that recently, I'm surprised you're posting this at all.. Some Sierra Club eco-freak sees trail coords, goes out and takes a pic of garbage left behind there (I'm not saying you left it there either..), or an A-hole w/ no regard for the tread lightly principle blazing about, clearly not on a trail, and KAPOW. Your favorite trail's no longer accessable.
Please don't do it

I disagree that posting trails and such as being ammo for 'eco-nazis'. Utah has seen in the last year that the, 'let's keep it secret' mentality has proven to be a massive fail. We are no longer in the days of 'waiting until our favorite areas are closed'. That mentality is detrimental to overland travel. Bringing to light thatbthere are loads of land users accessing land is far more important to broadcast, than keeping areas 'secret'.
The land managing agencies are far more willing to work with trails if they can categorize them, and include them on their travel maps. Coyote canyon in Moab is a prime example.
The website is far more geared toward county roads, ghost towns, mining history, rather than rock-crawling type trails. The forum idea is that travelers can research the areas they want to explore and find things about the area, or in the area that they might have otherwise never known about.

Agreed, but the number of users who disrespect the land and laws, FAR outweighs those who make a concerted effort to clean, and rebuild. As Govt funding dries up, it's easier for the Fed, and States to just put up fencing to keep us out, and their expenses down..
