Torque Specs

Disclaimer:
These numbers were pulled manually from the 2005 Nissan Xterra Service Manual (revision Feb. 2006). There could be errors in translation, typos, misreading of the manual, brain farts, etc. Please double-check these torque specs with Nissan. I take no responsibility if you use these specs and something falls off.

I will add to this over time. If there is anything I am missing or someone sees that is wrong, please let me know and I'll add it.

Swaybar Mounting Brackets: 96 ft-lbs [FSU-5]
Swaybar Connecting Rod (Both Ends): 62 ft-lbs (Replace After Removal) [FSU-5]
LCA Bump Stop: 14 ft-lbs [FSU-5]

I'm getting there. :)

Unless it is requested, I am not going to list every torque spec for things such as engine rebuilds, diff rebuilds, etc. There are just way too many specs and they have to be exact. If someone is going to be rebuilding a diff, I sure hope they have access to a SM or other info.

Front Suspension:

Swaybar Mounting Brackets: 96 ft-lbs
I'd suggest that you include the full torque specs, just like in the Service Manual, even if you want to 'highlight' the foot-pounds value.
For example, the torque spec shown for the "Stabilizer bar mounting bracket" on page FSU-5 of the SM is "130 (13, 96)", which are the values in Newton-meters, Kilogram-meters, and Foot-pounds.
You could do something like "96 ft-lbs (130, 13)" and have a note at the top that numbers in parentheses are "(N-m, kg-m)".

For example:
REAR FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY, Breather 31 ft-lbs (3.5 0.36)
(that's the 'rear diff breather', page RFD-50)

Also, is it worth referencing the source of the torque value? Over time, some values might come from places other than the Service Manual. Values that do come from the SM could be done like this:
REAR FINAL DRIVE ASSEMBLY, Breather 31 ft-lbs (3.5 0.36) [SM RFD-50]

All great ideas. I do have only so much time though. ;)

I also think listing more than just the ft-lbs could translate into human error. When pulling the numbers I am getting them from the assembly drawings in the SM. You can not select the text there to do a cut and paste, so I am manaully entering the numbers into a spreadsheet and then updating this page. If I have to manually enter three numbers for every spec I am surely going to make a typing error. I think if someone needs more than the ft-lbs given they can dig up that info. Adding the source isn't a bad idea though and I'll make note of that when I am grabbing the data.

Hey Muzik, I'm replacing my front sway bar bushings with the Titan ones from 4x4parts.com (same ones bucksnort bought) and I've got 40,000 miles on the beast.

Why does it say in the torque specs to replace after removal on the "sway bar rod ends"(I think that's what they're called)?

What are these? Do I have to unbolt them to get the new poly bushings on? Do I really have to replace them when I replace the sway bar bushings?

Whew. Sorry about the cluster#^$% of questions there.

Oh, I got one more. Do you have the torque specs for the body mounts?

It means replace the nut on the connecting rods, or as you called them, Swaybar rod ends. It does not mean to replace the entire rod. Is this needed, probably not, but it's stated in the FSM to replace them.

The connecting rods are what attach the sway bar to the lower control arm.

When I had a front swaybar, I replaced the swaybar bushings without disconnecting the connecting rods. This was with a Shrock front bumper and the radiator skid removed. I am not sure if there is room with the stock bumper, but there probably is.

Is there a torque spec for the leaf spring center pin?

Well, the pin does play a major role but it does not get torqued to a high tension. What is meant to handle all the stress is the U-bolts, those get torqued much tighter. If the U-bolts are torqued properly there should be very little/No stress on the center pin. It's not designed to handle a lot of stress....this is why, 3 times now, we have spent hours on the trail at Rausch, because when the U-bolts are loose or there is play in the leaf pack for any reason, the center pin simply fails. My point here is, there is no need to torque it way high, just tighten it down, make sure there is no play in the leaf pack. If you over tighten it, all you're doing is adding stress to a failure point.

Sorry I dont have a torque spec after all that lol, I can tell you that the last two times I messed with them on my truck, I snugged them up against the bottom leaf. Put C-clamps on the leaf packs and clamped all the leafs together so that the center pin wasnt taking the stress and then tightened the center pin down with a small ratchet. Nothing crazy, just snugged it up with a ratchet. You'll be fine that way.

Perhaps I missed it, but what are the torque specs for the tranny pan bolts?

From the Nissan FSM:

Transmission pan bolts : 7.9 N·m (0.81 kg-m, 70 in-lb)

(Note: Nissan recommends new bolts, self-sealing, but I bet a dab of red RTV near the fead of the bolt will suffice)

Drain plug : 34 N·m (3.5 kg-m, 25 ft-lb)
