Creek

there's no legal spots in North Jerz...I have yet to go out on any of the "not so legal" trails, but my buddies go out in their jeeps quite often - i don't know where though

pine barrens?...i used to drive through them every year i went to the beach, looked like some great wheeling areas, but i don't really know if it's legal

I always wondered about the Pine Barrens too.

I drive down the beach and see trails lining the sides of the roads but I never knew if they were legal or not.

Anybody know the story in Jersey barrens?

Muzikman
12-24-2007, 01:31 PM
I know people have wheeled there in the past. I don't know of it's legality. There are a number of Jersey related off-road clubs. Might want to check one of them. I don't know if the NJAX is still around or not, but they would know.

Creek

The Barrens are in south Jersey...about 2 hours from us in North Jerz. As far as I know, the Barrens are legal.

yea from what i hear and what people at school say where they wheel that place is legal but yea like creek said its 2 or 3 hours form north jersey

Muzikman
12-24-2007, 02:50 PM
I have to travel a minimum of an hour to find a place to wheel. It's not too bad. The problem is they keep closing down spots. I use to have 4 or so places within an hour that offered a solid days worth of wheeling. That number is quickly shrinking.

I would be shocked that there would be much in Northern Jersey. Is there any wheeling spots in North East PA?

Creek
12-24-2007, 03:34 PM
hell, if we were going to travel 2+hrs to wheel, we might as well go to Rausch Creek. It took me about 2 hours to get home from there 2 weeks ago

Muzikman
12-24-2007, 03:40 PM
Wish I lived 2 hours from RC. I would be there a lot more often. :)

There are NO legal places to wheel in northern NJ. The place on route 23/greenwood lake area is not legal nor are the places in Mahwah. I hear if you get caught in mahwah the fines are very high now!!

Creek
12-29-2007, 04:23 AM
yo Xkid...if you want to go out to R. Creek, post up on here...i'm down and i'm sure some other guys would go...give atleast 2 weeks notice. 2 hours away ain't that bad. we'll break in your X anytime you want!!!

say what?!?!?! Where do you live? I'm down in Essex County. Who's private property is this? A friend of yours?

friend of a friend of a friend. Its non posted land in West Milford. No not greenwood lake or route 23. Friends have been wheeling there for a few years now, most of the locals up here know about it and wheel it hard. Alot of trails.

That sounds like a mythical place.

StonyPointX

Yes the Pine Barrens are legal, when we went down there we checked in with the park rangers to make sure it was legal. Beleive it or not you can "offroad" in ringwood state park. The rangers will let you drive in the park if you have a permit allowing you to either go to the model airplane field, hunt or participate in a trail clean up program. Also if i'm not mistaken the mystical offroading place in West Millford is off of Burnt Meadow road.

Pete is rigt about Burnt Medow Road. Thats the place. Its private land, unposted. Just dont go there and start bonefires and get the volies all worked up.

most of the land off burnt meadow road has been purchased by the state now. it was private land until recently, but it hasn't all been posted as state forest yet. i'm not sure how legit it is to wheel there but i doubt any body will bother you if you don't cause a problem. the road itself can be entertaining after a good snow storm.

I've heard of someplace with a "Paradise Rd" in North Jersey, but have never been there. I usually go to the resevoirs and wheel back there.

njdave
05-03-2009, 07:42 PM
you have to be careful in nj. property does not have to be posted no trespassing, so even when you dont see the sign it can still be illegal.

Do any of you guys with stock X's go on the trips to go wheeling? Or is it mostly guys with jacked up rigs with big a$$ tires?

If you hop on a rausch trip you'll be able to do pretty much every blue trail there with a stock X as long as you're careful and have some experience with rocks. You might need a spotter here and there to help you out. Greens will be a piece of cake and lots of fun to learn on.

Paradise Road in West Milford ... nothing spectacular .... a better trail start next to the reservoir in Oak Ridge and goes up ending to a gogo bar next to rt 15. Nice and rocky :)

What is a "rausch trip"?

rausch creek is a decent off road park in tremont PA about 2.5 hours from NNJ

a rausch trip is a trip to rausch creek :)

What is a "rausch trip"?

Keep an eye in the Mid-atlantic forum. Anytime there is a rausch creek trip, or a trip to the pine barrens with guys from the area, itll be posted up there usually as well.

Join GPAX
At Rausch, you can run greens and easy blues in a stock truck. though on the blues you should be cautious if you dont have skids.

you can run all of the pineys stock, but i wouldn't go through any of the big mud pits.

XmanNavy
05-05-2009, 02:45 PM
gotcha. are there any other off road parks closer to NNJ?

and I have the stock skids from the OR edition, but are you talking about adding extra skids?

etymotic
05-05-2009, 02:57 PM
no, didint realize you had the OR. those are what im currently running, and haven't had a problem.

but if youre going to want to run harder blue and blacks Shrock skids are a necessity. the stock skids aren't meant to take a serious beating.

i know for a fact the majority of us will be running at ECXC. The more the merrier.

XmanNavy
05-06-2009, 12:53 PM
Should I be looking into the rock sliders that go on the side, or more skids for underneath?

Rexterra
05-07-2009, 02:10 PM
Off Roads have (weenie) skids all ready so get sliders first.

etymotic
05-07-2009, 10:53 PM
yeah skids first us usually the more logical approach

Update: There is now a big iron gate blocking the entrance to the splitrock area via Charlettesburg rd.

- However, I checked out Burnt Meadow rd the other day and there are a couple of offshoots to wheel. I haven't explored it much, but I will in the future.

-if anyone knows the best offshoots to wheel in burnt meadow, please let us know.

Creek

^those off shoots aren't legal...

XmanNavy
08-17-2009, 12:01 PM
Please enlighten us. There was a point where there were no trespassing signs, at which point I turned around. There was another point that had a gate ans a sign that said no motozied vehicles alowed. I was on the parts before the signs, no gates, no resevoir watershed, and no houses. I also believe there are two entrances to Burnt Meadow. I came in from Greenwood lake turnpike.

-Creek, have you ever been pulled over, seen a cop, been stopped or fined at burnt meadow? (just wondering, becasue I know around the jersey City resevoirs they are really strict and have seen cops)
Thanks for the info

baf6
08-17-2009, 12:26 PM
dude if its in NJ it aint legal unless its the pine barrens, with the exception of a few small spots

just because there aren't any obvious signs saying "No Trespassing" doesn't mean its legit....it aint....

i used to wheel a nice section of trails in bloomingdale for a while until i troopers started showing up in grand cherokees and getting people while they were on the trails....

there are some spots near mahwah and some private property/private access spots in north jersey that are legal, but most of the terrain isn't worth the drive (at least not from clifton)

I live in North jersey and i take my X to a trail off glen road. i dont think its legal. But my friend goes to the rockaway river (i havent been yet) and he says its not posted so im not sure.

Also tell me more about this paradise road. thats off of 23 right?

kokopop
09-26-2009, 04:44 PM
it is always your best bet is to head out to places like the pine barrens or Rausch Creek.

It is a huge detriment to the off road community to wheel illegally and makes it very difficult to keep some legal places open.

Now I am stepping off my soap box.

XmanNavy
09-28-2009, 12:46 PM
I checked it out recently and there are no trespassing signs all over the place. Especially where there where places to get off the road. That area is close to the resevoirs so there are watershed cops over there. I just turned around and left. Better to find another place.

Rook

There are a couple of (illegal) places up by me in Andover but they are few and far between and generally i stay away because the cops can be nasty up there. It is a lot of fun but i usually just go down to souther jerz or rausch. I dont have enough mods (winch) to keep myself from getting stuck in the woods and requiring a tow out (and a hefty fine) so for now ill just stay away.

Mine isn't great either....trust me.... (old trek 6000). but anyway, what weekend works for everyone. Im pretty booked up until the weekend of the 6th 7th and 8th of November but after that im relativley free....especially in the morning and early afternoon. Does a chilly ride or a mod day/hangout on the 7th or 8th of november sound good to anyone. I don't want to have the mod day too late in the year because its going to start getting very cold soon.

On a sidenote, I met with Hodge-X last night, a local 1st gen guy and I really liked his setup. I actually think im going to emulate his suspension setup on my 2nd gen (more or less) We are meeting on wednesday to do install my NX rocks sliders and grab a couple beers.

Does anyone have a garage or access to a shop they could volunteer for a mod day?

we usually do mod days in my street in front of my house...if nobody has a shop for the mod day, everyone is welcome at my place...not the 7th/8th though, my sister is getting married then

Let's just put it this way, the last time I was at Rausch, I led a small group that included my buddy's 2007 F-150 which has less ground clearance than us (front diff hangs low). He was smacking it left and right. I've run Rausch bone stock before and had no problems. I actually came out with more damage after running stock trails with tires and sliders!

You should be fine as long as you take it slow and have somebody good spotting you through the rougher sections.
