I've got 5,000 miles on my Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx tires now. Ran them hard in Moab and Arizona. Drove in torrential rain in Amarillo. They've been off-road for over 450 miles total.

These are a new tire for Cooper, a hybrid between A/T tires and dedicated M/T tires. I paid $165 per tire for them in stock O.R. size (265-75-16).

I've been very impressed by the Maxx.

Dry Grip: Better than expected. The truck feels planted and stable and tracks true on the road. Cornering grip will always be mediocre in an Xterra, but these Coopers do fine in the twisties.

Wet Grip: Much better than expected. Drove through an hour straight of pouring rain outside Amarillo and the Coopers stuck great. No hydroplaning. Good feedback. Truck always felt secure.

Mud: Hit mud after some recent rains in Moab and also in Big Bend. Tires did well. This wasn't deep mud, but it was enough to get your attention. The Coopers moved through it with ease.

Rocks: Excellent performance on the rocks. I air down to 25 psi on the trail and the Coopers scramble like mountain goats.

Sand: Sand performance is fine, but it's not these tires' strong suit. A fair amount of horizontal motion when driving (aired down) through deep sand and some slippage starting from a stop.

Slickrock: Sandy slickrock is a challenge for any tire. The Coopers perform as well as some BFG A/Ts on an Xterra that I was sharing the trail with. Their performance is good but not outstanding here. That said, they made it up everything I wanted them to.

Snow: I have not used these tires in the snow.

SUM UP: A great all-round tire with serious off-road capability. The look is aggressive. The price is right. And the performance is top notch. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.

Did you buy these in Austin? If so, may I ask where?

Yes. Sears Auto at Hancock. They price-matched the online price I brought in.

bought mine just before goneMoab and have been very happy with them... we drove 3000 miles going to Moab and coming home (CA-NV_UI-CO-NM-AZ-CA) and they performed great both on and off road... I have about 15K on them now and they seem to be wearing well but I don't think they'll beat my last set of ST's which got 60K+ (my first ST's got around 40K)... I paid something like $750 installed which was a little more than the last set but the ST Maxx's are definitely a better tire...

cool ... load E's?
have you tried airing down more? if so, was there any change with 25 psi?

here is another review (http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/59755-Cooper-Discoverer-S-T-Maxx)on their 285s

Yes, E-load tires. I'm not sure the Maxx comes in any other flavor.

At 25 psi I was getting good deformation over the rocks so I didn't feel the need to air down further. Drove the entire 91-mile long White Rim Trail and 25 psi seemed about right.

For deep sand, I should probably have aired down even more but there wasn't a lot of sand, so I plowed through at 25.

I wanted to get these but they only came in E loads and I wasn't willing to take the mpg hit. I ended up with the ST because the AT3 just wasn't very aggressive looking.

UPDATE: I've now gone 10,000+ miles on these tires and over 800 miles off-road. Still really like them. In fact, I had them switched to my new truck when I traded the 2010 for a 2012. I won't update their off-road performance since it remains excellent. Dry traction is also never a problem. Hydroplaning resistance is good too. The only minor issue is lateral traction in the wet. I've had the rear end try to step out on me a couple of times in low-speed corners when the truck is weighted down. This is to be expected from M/Ts because the tread blocks are so big, but it's still a little disconcerting. The Xterra's stability control corrected without a hiccup.

For those who were wondering where I found them online for cheap, it was at treadepot.com. They have them listed at $182. I think I paid $165 for mine back when the tire first came out, but they're still an excellent tire for $182 each.

They're also American made, if that matters to you.

Are these still performing well? How's the treadwear? I've got a set coming next week, can't wait.

They're still great. Been wearing like iron. I had them swapped from my 2010 to my 2012 when I switched trucks. That should tell you how much I like them, because it would have been a perfect excuse to change tires.

I have about 35K on my Maxx's now including another trip to Moab and I have been impressed by their long term tread wear... I had an alignment problem after our first trip to Moab and the fronts chunked up and were riding harsh.. my tire guy rotated them to the back and filled them with nitrogen and after about 2K the harshness was gone... from the looks of them I expect to get another 15K easily...

Nice,I just had mine put in last week and love them. I haven't been able to find many treadwear reviews so that helps a lot
