: How-to: Volant Install (Still Few Punch List Items)

I planned to make a more detailed how-to but my water pump gave up on me so couldn't take too many pictures. So this is my attempt at a how to for the Volant Install, time to give back to the site :notworthy:

1. Buy the volant and note that now they do not come with a horn relocation bracket.

2. To keep the filter safe, remove the powercore filter, by loosening the hose clamps, rotating 90 degrees vertical and take out.

3. Assemble the volant box and the intake tube along with the end connection rubber pieces along with all the hose clamps. This is to make it easier while installing on the X. Tighten the hose clamps only slightly to allow you to wiggle it on the throttle body intake and the intake box. Keeping it loose will also allow you to rotate the intake tube while in the engine bay to allow fitting the MAF sensor and the engine relief easily.

4. No go to you X and take your positive terminal off (i did that just to be safe, im no good with electronics).

5. Remove the top two bolts holding the engine cover. Its the cover with V6 4.0 written on it and keep the bolts safe in a zip lock bag.

6. Remove the engine cover by pulling on it vertically using two hands, there are two connections which 'pop off' with a gentle but strong pull.

7. You'll now see two more bolts holding the cover with the nissan emblem. take them off easily and disconnect the existing engine exhaust by pressing the clip and pulling the hose away.

8. Loosen the hose claps at the throttle body intake side and stock filter box side and remove the assembly, place a clean cloth on top of the throttle body intake to avoid any dust from going in. You could also go for a throttle body clean at this time.

9. Now open the stock filter box and remove the stock filter. It is held on by three bolts. 2 on the outside and one on the inside. The outside bolt close to the headlamps is difficult to take out but can be done with a small spanner. Note that it will not come fully out, just loosen to the extent possible.

8. Once you've got your stock filter box loose, keep it at one side with the MAF sensor connected. Now youll have to remove the stock horn bracket, this was tuff and had to use a extended ratchet with a pivot and 12mm socket connection. Eventually it came out. I am still have to mount it back.

9. Put in your volant box and air intake tube assembly and adjust it so that it lines up with the throttle body and volant air box. There is a ground wire, which i left there. Also there is pipe attached to the stock intake box, not sure what to do with that yet.

10. Now remove the MAF sensor from the stock intake by slowly loosing the two screws on it. Slowly remove the MAF sensor and place the MAF sensor gasket that come with the volant kit, with silver side up. Make sure to even tighten the screws, i did the upper one half way then the lower one half way and then completely hand tighten both screws.

11. I had some issues in aligning up the volant box holes with that of the stock holes, but just managed to connect it to the top bolt. while held the box very nicely.

12. Now place your powercore filter into the volant box and make sure all the hose clamps are nice and tight.

13. Turn on the engine and see if it all look good and just re-check all the hose clamp tightness.

14. Put the volant cover on.

15. Enjoy the new intake performance.

16. Remaining work horn relocation and tightening the intake box.

Ill try to post up some pics as soon as i have my X back....feel soo bumbed out!:crybaby:

I noticed a considerable increase in the rev before the auto tranny shifted gears and the accelerator response was awesome! Although there were some vibration at full acceleration i think ill tighten the volant box.

thanks, did you use the 05-08 box or the new one? I dont want the gaping hole they put in the 08-10 model but want it to fit right.

the new one does not "fit right" either. i had to file fit the lower two mounting holes to get them to line up right, took a while but it is tight and not going anywhere.

as far as the big hole in the bottom i will have check my filter to see how nasty the box is due to slush and stuff getting into it. but i might take a mold of a f**king coffee can and make a fiberglass plug for that

I can't in good conscience buy a volant if it has that gaping hole so I guess 05-08 for me on ky 2011

Im not sure of the purpose of the 3" hole in the Volant but the fitment was perfect in my 2011.

The hole is so the airbox doesn't hit the horns. Apparently Volant thought it was too much work for the customer to extend a couple of wires and relocate the horns.

FYI, You do not have to move the horn with the new Volant. It fits perfectly in front of the horn. I've installed 2 of these into 2011 pro4x in the last month. The hole i spoke of is right below the intake hole.

thats the ram air hole I believe.

I want a closed box cold air intake, the new huge front hole in the volant is not sealed therefore I want an older model I guess.

Maybe for the snorkel add-on?

Which Volant intake did you install, the 05-08 model without the cutout for the horns, or the 09+ model with the hole so it fits around the horns?

Just installed the Volant CAI on my 05... super helpful with this how to thread!! thank you !! everything lined right up!! i couldn't get the last bolt in inside the box. the one down towards the bottom... i'm not sure if the bolt was long enough..so i left it out for now...i'll give it a day or so then i'll try again. what have people done with the breather line that was ziptied to the old box? any ideas? also, what year is the horn located where you have to move it? my 05 was nowhere near the intake area. which made it that much easier and faster to install this.

Just installed the Volant CAI on my '05 as well!
Simple install (thanx for the How-To), no codes thrown, everything fit perfectly!

I did have to figure something out for the gaping hole near the bottom though...

Found this at Home Depothttp://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZiFJ_4J4AFU/TnNwM5e2q2I/AAAAAAAAAaU/s0M1hCsWfgQ/s1024/11%2011:48:01%20AM

I just added the covering cap for the second hole, and I must say the truck sounds a lot quieter...

Also, is this just my wrong perception??? I noticed the truck is a lot more responsive and feel a lot more torque??? also the idle seems to have smoothened out a lot better???
