I have had the same laptop for 3.5 years. Worked great until today. I was review some documents when I heard an awful grinding noise from the HD. The no system disk was displayed on the screen. Looks like my HD is toast.
In the process of reformatting a new drive. Lost all my links, but I have all other data on my server and NAS drive. Just a PITA!!!

Man someone turned me on to the google toolbar and when you use that all your links go with you, You can be on a hotel computer in the lobby in Spain and your Favs will show up. I use it because I have 2 lap tops, 1 Desktop, and 4 wireless PDA's I use. Best thing I ever did. Always there! Auto share! MC

Unfortunately it's not unusual for laptop hard drives to fail after a couple of years, though the quality is improving. Desktop hard drives will last much longer. It's happened to me as well. Prices on laptop hard drives are much higher too.

That sucks, Keith. I've heard that infamous dreaded clanking noise come from several laptop hard drives here at work over the years.

Mine went out like 6 months after I bought my laptop. It's 2 and 1/2 years old now and as soon as I get my truck paid off I'm investing in a new one.. so yea, it happens!

Back up and running. Took yesterday off to go skiing with all the new snow.
Amazingly, my old harddrive started working again and I got all my data off it. But the new one is much quieter.

That's great that you got all the info off of the failing drive. It's not unusual for a failing hard drive to work intermittently until it fully crashes.

Thanks. A few quick wacks on the desk helped.
No I just need to personalize it the way I had it. That is the most frustrating part.

interesting, i have a compaq, 6 years and going strong...hinge on the monitor broke so it doesn't stay up without some support, but otherwise it works fine. had a toshiba for school, 5 years and it started to show some major wear and tear (i was a little rough with it), just bought a new mac in december, hopefully no future problems with it.

Got a Dell Inspiron 2650 maxed out. Bulletproof! Carried it to work daily in and out of trucks, rain sleet snow sun, bumpy truck rides all that I could dish, still ticks like new. Only upgraded memory, And a little JB weld where it too a 7 ft drop to cement off the seat of a big truck. But, it's way too heavy compared to my also bulletproof 3700 Averatec that weighs half as much. I don't think I'd buy a Dell again, but I'd buy another Averatec in a heatbeat! CS reasons. You know, the guy from India that says his name is Elaine? MC
