Nice setup.
Like the custom rear recovery.
I came across that storage box online, and almost pulled the trigger. Gonna have to now after seeing it on yours.
How do you like the ladder on the left? I got that too, but am thinking of moving it to the right (the wiper is often in the way).

Thanks guys! I love the way it looks with out the brush guard on it. Updated first post with the lift and the painted grill. Just have to take it off road and get some nice field shots.

The box works great! I keep all my recovery gear in there, 2 tow straps, 2 tree savers, Hi-Lift base, Wheel-Mate for hi-lift, towels, chains and extra shackles.

I like the ladder on the left, I just have to be careful climbing up it because of the rear wiper. You going to just move the ladder over? Or buy a new one for the right side?

Took a few pics of the Deflecta Shield storage box I have on the rack, and some of the Quick Fist mounts I use up there.

To start off, I lined the bottom of the box with some foam/rubber gym mats. Helps keep things a little quiet when your bouncing around. The tape is covering the bolt heads, to keep them from snagging on any of the straps.

Items in the box: 1 30ft. tow strap, 6ft loop tow strap, Hi-Lift base, Hi-Lift wheel lift, 1 tree saver, gas can spout, piece of wood for whatever purpose it may be used for, camo pouch with extra shackles and 2 small lengths of chain, and another strap that could be used as a tree saver. Also keep some towels and extra plastic bags.

On too the Quick Fist mounts. There cheap, there pretty easy and they work great! You can mount em almost anyway you can think of. On top of the lid, just a few washers, bolt and nut and it's good to go.

http://i631.photobucket.com/albums/uu34/Blain556/Badlands/IMGP2595.jpg

For the back, I took 2, 90 degree pieces of metal I picked up at Lowes, and attached it to the rack the same way I did the lid. Just had to find some washers so it wouldn't slide through the flooring.

HAha, nice. I only mount it when I'm going camping/wheeling, other wise it makes a nice smash and grab tool. When it's on, and I'm driving down the road if someone gets a little too close and see's the axe, they tend to back off a little quicker. So, it does more than just chop wood.

Finished up the Shrockworks Dif cover painting yesterday. Painted it to match the color of the X, we'll see how it holds up.

Next up, have to touch up the honeycomb part of the grill, and give the shackles a fresh coat. Also a few orange spots on the underside that need to be taken care of.

Finally got around to replacing the rear hatch struts. Used Mcmaster-Carr, placed order and had them in 2 days! Install took about 10 minutes and definitely worth it! I don't know why I put this off for so long. Also gained a few extra inches, when the hatch is completely open, and doesn't interfere with the ladder, roof rack, or the back up lights.

Got the info from Rexterra, in the other thread. So thanks for all the help guys.
BTW, these struts fit the 07' and you do not need to order the Ball Socket. Others may, so double check.

Nice. I put the Gobi struts on about a year ago and it made a HUGE difference in cold weather opening.

My gobi's, With gobi ladder, Standard Med-kit in door. If cold. 40's. pop the latch.. it will slowly raise up to mid point & stops. Have to give it a lift to Top position. But it stay's. up.. Does not drift.. Or it will drift up to just even with the Back seats for height.. Swacked head on it already.. Now, I guide it up with hand..to dble check

Closing is easy till about 1 foot away from closing It needs a slight push.. DONE

Better then the Factory... Happy with them.

Couple little things about the fuel container.

I had filled it up on a camping trip a few months back but never got around to using it or needing it til a few weeks ago. It holds fuel just fine, and no leaks what so ever. Just have to remove the spout, and store it somewhere. Preferably somewhere outside, cause gas tends to stink up the inside real quick.

So I decided to use the gas, and just fill up in my driveway. Hopefully I'll never have to do this on the side of the road. The spout could be a little longer, it has a lip on one side that has to be pushed in for the fuel the flow through. The part that makes it a pita, is just holding it, with it pushed in, and making sure it actually goes in, and doesn't over flow the outer area and spill every where. Even then it took 3-5 minutes to empty the 4 gallon container.

But it's kinda nice that it's real low profile. But takes forever to fuel back up. For those with other types of cans, how do you like em?

that's the stupid CARB spout. I hate those things. My Scepter cans are great. None of that nonsense. It's got a really long flexible spout which is interchangeable between cans. I can empty 5 gals in about 2 mins.

Thanks.

I'll see what I can do about having a few friends acquire me some fuel cans. Are your cans metal or plastic?

They do sell some water cans in the same design as the one I have. I think those would be good, and finding a place to mount them wouldn't be too hard. And they do look kinda cool.

Blain - I was just looking at your rear recover points. You might want to radius the cut out corners a bit. It looks like the corners are sharp edges and that could lead to cracking.

Sure, it's not required since there's not a lot of repetitive stress on the bumper, but my sheetmetal training has me always doing that. Other than that, it seems that you've made some improvements since the last time we were wheeling.

Wait, those are all four the ion yellow fogs?

They are the 520 series, yellow lights. They have a pretty focused beam so I'm guessing their driving lights.

I have the middle 2 lights pointing straight ahead, and the outter ones pointed off to the sides slighty.

Yeah I hear ya. I had planned on making it all nice and clean, then when I realized I made the mounts too short I did a horrible job hacking up the bumper. But it's functional, and it works. My next big project is going to be a rear bumper, so I wont have to worry about anything cracking. Hopefully sometime soon I can start it.

Tail light guards, stealthed emblems, added a touch of paint to the rear step things. Forgot the grip tape, so painted the raised area black for now. Nice and clean looking.

Ohh man! I thought I was going to be the first....Looks nice!

Definitely did mine the hard way, read that the Nissan emblem had clips on the inside. Took off the interior panel on the rear hatch, peeled back some insulator foam only to find out they were set pins. No clips at all, for touch ups I'm just going to mask off the area and spray. I'll remove the ladder if I have to, not too difficult. Dental floss, and some WD-40 took em right off though.

Still have to stealth those rear corners. Might as well do the rear hatch handle as well.

Your truck is sweet. How much does the gobi rack cost? I can only see to find it priced with a ladder, which I already have. I have thule bars mounted to my stock rails, think I could mount that on top of the gobi to make it wider for bikes on the outside of the rack?

I have two yakima high rollers, which are probably the best you can get for the roof - stability wise and I don't have to take off a tire. If I put them in the middle it would make the cargo area useless, they are too big.

Blain
02-12-2010, 03:04 PM
Thank you. I don't remember the exact cost. More than a Shrock front w/winch.

I got the ladder for free when I bought the lights & rack. Best bet would be to call GOBI and get a quote from them.

Have a link to those Thule Bars you have? Bars would probably fit, but would have to get different mounts. The cross bars on the GOBI are around 1in. tube. How many bikes you trying to get up top?

I have one of these Front Fork Mount (http://eddys.com/product/saris-trap-fork-mount-65362-1.htm)

And I also have the Yakima BOA (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://media.rei.com/media/655286Lrg.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.rei.com/product/655286&usg=__kBL0pMNUdPaG653eerr2Ci2WcaA=&h=440&w=440&sz=20&hl=en&start=3&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=XZJbeJFOsOgmTM:&tbnh=127&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3DYakima%2BBoa%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfir efox-a%26rls%3Dcom.google:en-US:official%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1)

Since I have my recovery box on the back their isn't room for the rear tire latch on the BOA. Going to be buying another Front Fork Mount, and using ratchet straps to secure the back tires.

I have 2 of the Yakima boa's like you do for the inside of my loadwarrior...

2 of these for the outside my loadwarrior http://www.rei.com/product/738322

and thule 67" load bars attached to my stock rails with these - http://www.rei.com/product/710446

I'm wondering if I could just attached my thule bars to the gobi with the 450 crossroads above.

Blain
02-13-2010, 06:45 PM
OK. Does the HighRoller attach to round or square tubing?

It says the CrossRoad is adjustable to all shapes and sizes, so I don't see why it wouldn't fit.

I had to add a little gorilla tape for the rear tire part of the BOA. I don't see what it wouldn't fit.

wisbike
02-13-2010, 10:17 PM
I'm thinking I could just attach the crossroad on top of the gobi then...hopefully soon I just have to come up with some cash. did you install the gobi yourself?

Blain
02-13-2010, 10:22 PM
Cool. I'll stop by the local bike shop sometime and try and confirm it for ya.

Installing the rack requires at least one other person. It's heavy, and kinda bulky, and if you don't want to scratch the paint one other person is a good idea. Just lay some towels/foam pads on the roof your good to go.

Once you get it on the top of the roof, it's a one person job from their(2 will make it go a little faster though) I didn't have a problem removing the stock rack/bolts but some did. Have to search for the solution on that one.

Messed around a little bit today. Replaced the straps on the rear hatch where the first aid kit goes. About a foot long on each side compared to the 6 in. stock straps. I do have the 175lb struts from McMaster Carr, so I put something a little heaver in that spot so far so good.

Fit up is probably the most important thing. The template that is provided does a good job of getting you in the right spot, but small adjustments will most likely be needed after. It takes a lot of playing around to get it just right.
The A-Pillar mount does a good job of keeping it secured, and I do have a small gap between the body, and the inside of the Snorkel. I don't know if it should be closer, but I wont have to worry about it rubbing. Unless your right next to it you can barely tell.

Thanks, since I had to wait til the weekend to install I thought I'd paint the logo's. Used some old model paint and a fine paint brush and carefully put a few coats on. And it's all ready starting to chip a little.

I thought about painting the whole thing white. Then I got the idea for the logo's. If I went all white, I'd black the logo's out. If I decide to paint it's going to be a while! I don't want to think about taking that fender off again for a long time, haha.

Yeah, what he said. You have to pop the hood, 4 tabs on top, then reach down behind it and their's 4 more push tabs and the whole thing comes out. They then seperate.

I've had to do mine twice. Since it's up front, the surface really needs to be sanded as best as it can. Some areas you simply can't reach, and in those area's it's starting to flake off again. Only did a few coats of clear coat on top, next time I'm going to use the whole can to really seal it.

I get some pretty good looks. The best is the point and jaw to the floor look though!

Nothing major, threw on some quickfist mounts to the top of the storage box. To free up some room on the inside for other smaller things. I'll keep them inside so they stay clean, and throw em on the roof when I'm on the trails. New antenna mount, so much better than the magnetic one. And a new sticker.

Can tune it whenever, I used that cable you gave me and it fits perfect. Had less than a foot of extra cable. I think my stickers are just flat black.

GOBI stuff is awesome! After applying some grip tape to the steps of the ladder it is much better! Trying to climb down in the rain inspired that idea. It's a lot safer!
The rack is solid, it looks BA, and I use it all the time when I go camping. Combined with the MCN Raingler net it holds everything!

Tried the Dupli-Color Bed Armor with Kevlar for the rocker panels. This stuff goes on very smooth, and had a lot of dripping going on compared to regular herculiner. After a few coats I finally got that textured look to show.

Peeled the tape off a little too soon I think, touch it up another time.

Their is a small gap, right where it comes off the body and onto the plastic. Hopefully it wont be too much of a problem. If so I'll just seal it with something. Other than that the seal is pretty tight all the way around.

While applying the front passenger guard, I had to push it up a little towards the front after applying it to straighten it out. The tape started to give way the other day, but is holding fine now. Haven't been on the highway yet, so we'll see.

For skull mounting (since it's even more iconic than my Cookie Monster beanie) you can mount it pretty easily. Find a long stud - probably about 3-4"* with decent diameter - probably 1/2" is the biggest you'd need. Drill a hole (slightly smaller than the diameter of the threads, enough to make pushing your stud in difficult but not painful) in the back of the skull at the proper mounting angle - should go in at least halfway. Mix up some epoxy, slather it on the stud and some in the hole, shove it in the whole way.

Drill a matching hole in the bumper and use a locknut set-up (two nuts, two washers - one set on either side of the bumper - suggest using nylon locking nuts). Now it's mounted where you need it to be.

I think you should take a crack at painting a large white skull onto the bumper and skid plate. If it doesn't work out, you can always copy that 4Runner and paint everything white.

Well, the skull is being passed onto Mr. Suckafish now. It shall remain in the OX group for a while, until their is no one left. It shall be passed down for all time.

The plan (eventually) is to paint the bumper white, with my top secret design...... For now I will definitely paint something either on the front, or the skid plate. I was thinking maybe a glow in the dark Jason Hockey mask secured to the front would go well?

Thanks guys! The bumper is only going to get sweeter!

Good. Yessir, still the plan. Going white was recently though, thought about doing a gray with the "design" but it will look and stand out so much more on white! Trying to decide this still. Not exactly sure what/where/how big though. How abouts a pin up girl though?

Thanks! It will definitely be different from anything out their. Without giving away what I plan on doing, it's going to involve removing/modifying/adding to the existing grill/headlight guards. The addition of some lights mounted differently than anything thus far, limb risers, possibly tool mounting.

I'm not going to call it a pre runner bar/stinger. It will be called the "get the hell out of my way" bar or a real "Zombie Plow"

I can't see the one image but any pin-up girl, if done well, is straight up pimp-stylin'.

If you're contemplating a pin-up girl - and like Ron says, done right, of course - I'd put her someplace more protected than the front/side of the bumper. Like the top surface of one of the wings (if smaller) or the fender (top near the mirror) or edge of the hood (between the gutter and your blackout). I think either of those locations could work well.

I've also thought the P-40 or A-10 shark mouth could look really cool, but haven't been able to wrap my head around it on the front of a bumpered X. I think since the nose is more wide than long (as opposed to a fighter) it may not work out as well ... maybe a bull-dog mouth or something.

Right, done correctly it would be a nice touch. If it's not just right, then it'll look like crap. Maybe on top of the black out? It should be smooth enough to stick a decal on. Just an idea for now, if it can be done then I'll go for it, if not then no big deal. Same for the teeth.

Hey, if someone can photo shop a white Shrock, hood black out, with some crazy teeth please do! That would be bad ass! I lack the skills and the program to do such things. I will get better pics. of the X soon.

Thanks! Yeah just saw your thread on it, I think it will look pretty damn awesome!
Can't say that I've seen any white S wheels around. Like OZ said, he's doing his steelies in white, that should be able to give you some idea when he gets em finished.

Best use of a BL gap yet.

(slightly smaller than the diameter of the threads, enough to make pushing your stud in difficult but not painful) in the back of the skull at the proper mounting angle - should go in at least halfway. Mix up some epoxy, slather it on the stud and some in the hole, shove it in the whole way.

Oh really.
:D

Great Picture and your truck is work of art in motion. That's a X thing!

I am tired of Jeeps getting all the gory deserved or not deserved!

Was just at the Dollar Store. They have the skulls for $3. The eyes light up and flash with LED's and a battery.

Did a little Halloween decorating to the X. Glow in the dark skull for the base of the CB antenna. Zip tied skeleton to the ladder.

I wanted to put the skeleton on the bumper, but couldn't figure out a good way to mount it.
