The hybrid and now-in-development electric cars may be all the rage publicly, but walk into a Nissan dealer and you’re likely in for a surprise when you discover the Xterra is the vehicle those dealers can’t keep in stock.

Just wait until Nissan gets their full-range hybrids out. Some of the larger car companies might be a bit surprised at how fast people switch to a car that is practical and fun to drive.

Nissan seems to be in a good place right now. They reorganized for the financial crisis faster than any other car company and they are building cars people actually want. They also haven't had a ton of bad publicity about bailouts or massive recalls.

I saw one used 2nd gen Xterra, and 4-5 '09s at a local dealer two nights ago. Figured there'd be a few more used 2nd gens.

They are not easy to find. The automatics and the non-Off Roads are the easiest, but they are still commanding a premium price - even the 05s and 06s.

I looked for weeks to find mine and I had to decide if I wanted a good color for the hot desert or the Off Road. I really wanted the 6-speed and I was lucky enough to find one. It was posted in the local listings on Sunday and it was mine by mid-afternoon Monday. I knew that if I slept on it that X would be gone.

They only reason I got mine is because I just HAPPENED to be at the dealership browsing around when they got my truck in. It hadn't even been checked into their inventory yet or detailed or anything. They got it all inspected, detailed, and ready to go while I talked numbers w/ the salesman. Then once I saw it all cleaned up, I couldn't NOT buy it. When I set out I said "only a black xterra..loaded..low miles" and this one fit every criteria. Haven't been happier since!

I hate to admit that, but I do look back at mine too. Weird... I know. I did the same one with my '01. Miss my old one, however love the new one just as much.

I had to drive to the chevy dealership this morning and since I was early I drove through the Nissan ship, only 1 and it was in the customer drive up service bay. Naturally I was bummed. These are very scarce.
I agree, it would be like district 9 meets batteries not included. LOL

It's nice to see that a Smart Car owner wrote about how it has it's place and so does the X.

I totally lucked out when I bought my 05 last year. I got it at a Ford dealership for 4k below blue book value. The manager said it had been sitting on his lot forever and he just wanted it gone. No problems and I haven't looked back since.

i never grew up with any trucks in the family so everything is a "car". just like all dogs are male and cats are female... it's funny over here in the desert our vehicle is a hyundai van.. but one of my customers drive an F250 and i have to visit his area sometimes so he picks me up in his TRUCK and the feeling of the suspension and just the overall vehicle feel is TRUCK and reminds me of the Xterra a lot so all in all i guess the Xterra is a "TRUCK"

and shouldnt you be posting my "Happy birthday Matsayz" instead of poking fun? hmm? hmmmm mister!? it's the 9th over here in the desert, stop slacking!

Wow I had a similar experience when i bought my 06 from a ford lot, got mine 2k below book, and they said they would go any lower then blue book until i told them i was leaving to look else where, then they gave me the price i wanted.

Its about time that some of these so call testing folks and reviewers can get past the wood panel with leather interior that they think is important to a SUV. I found the article honest and consistant with owners of X's.
Now Nissan needs to get that turbo Diesal motors in!

I wonder why the resale value is so low than. I bought mine because it was such a good deal that I honestly thought they were trying to pawn a lemmon off on me. they sold me on the fact that it is a 6spd with no auto doors or windows and no cruise control.

I was in love at that point

i wish i could have waited for a manual tranny. but seriously, if an american car manufacturer ever gets wise they will start making vehicles that last as long as the nissans and toyotas and hondas, every car i have owened that was made by a us car company always had things breaking on it. i have had problems with the x at times but at whats considered high mileage.

Well so much for "The demise of the Xterra". Hopefully with the change of politics in a year or so , just may be Nissan will get on with the Turbo Diesels or at the very least a turbo gas engine.
Ford took a chance(big big) with their duel turbo gas engine and know their f150 with the proper rear axle is claiming 25-26 MPG highway.

Nissan has been keeeping this on low for the while. As many of you guys have posted. The EPA has been doing everything in thier power to stop the diesel trend. Right now they are content in thier quit fuzzy hybrids. No one (large sales) is buying them, even with a tax a payer rebate. The gas and diesel is not dead and the technoligy has not come too the end.

I would def buy a diesel version!
