TRIP REPORT:

people posting Picture thread here : Black Rock 2017 Pictures

3 Rigs(MrBills, SurfnSnow, Travzilla) met in Gerlach, NV and some of Bruno’s casino’s famous Large Ravioli.

9 rigs and 11 people from NorCal and SoCal met in Fernley Nevada on Thursday night. And DaveN and VetXsquared met here also Friday early AM for breakfast at Denny’s.
For a total of 11 rigs and 13 people. DaveN got his rig put back together from a shaft seal leak and drove all night from SLC and VetXsquared drove from Sacramento over the I-80 pass with snow and sleet to meet us in the am.

Thursday night we had drinks and conversation at the Silverado casino in Fenley and later retired to the “Flame Grill” for more drinks and dinner.
We met up with George Herr(“DR”) and John Kaper, and Steve(skohl) and Jon Kohl, LNXPenguin, nworker, XKNUT, CKAYAKS, GeoXplorer, and TurtleX .

Beer and pizza and ribs was the order of the day. Story telling and careful consideration of the weather approaching.
We(XKNUT and I) had driven through snow and sleet on the way over from the bay area and over the i-80 “Donner pass”.
Snow level was 6-7 thousand feet on our way over but had gotten worse by the time VetXsquared came over at midnight.

We met DaveN and VetXsquared at Denny’s where we all gassed up , ate and radio checked for our trip up to Gerlach Nevada.
Which was uneventful. We met MrBills and SurfandSnow and Travzilla at the ”friends of the Black Rock Desert” building there.
This made a total of 14 rigs and 16 people.

Again we topped off for our trip out to BRL(Black Rock Lake) the entire playa was covered in water which made for an unusual sight.
We made the turn at Soldier meadow road and aired down.

We had wanted to explore the canyon and mining roads on numerous trips but this trip was the opportunity since going to the eastern side of the black rock desert was too wet for safe travel.
I was also sad since I was looking forward to a soak at “Double Hot” springs.
Eventually we made it up to soldiers meadow and its associated hot springs, although we did not find them that night.
We found some warm and hot seeps not suitable for soaking.

What we did find was a BLM cabin at the meadows that was fully stocked with supplies and a wood shed with enough wood for a week.
The cabin had a table with food, booze, cooking stuff and a wood stove that heated the whole cabin in the freezing weather.
The cabin was available on a first come first serve policy from the BLM and a “pack it out philosophy”.
Friday night saw howling winds and 34-35 degree temps overnight. It was nice to be out of the wind in a heated cabin after TurtleX cooked up 10 pounds of Korean BBQ spare ribs for dinner.

The single malt scotch flowed as new friends were made and old ones renewed friendships’.
We got about an hours worth of rain/snow which had frozen by morning.

Saturday, CKAYAKS took a group of rigs out to explore a few shelf roads and trails on the eastern side and south of our camp.
Towards double hot springs which we had been warned away from by the locals. “pea soup” wet, sticky and “up to your axles” were phrases that had taken SurfandSnows excitement at that prospect away.

Which he loudly vocalized as the scotch flowed his way Friday night

Saturday at the campsite had a few guys looking for the hot springs(which they found) and a few of us(me) taking a nap in the warm cabin.
I did manage to wake up and go get a great soak in with John Kohl at a hot spring they found that was a “perfect” 104 degrees.
Dinner was cooked up by Walter(LNXPenguin) and it was a feast of 10/12 pounds of tri-tip he rustled up over the grill.

More single malt flowed that evening as the temperature dropped to 28 degrees overnight and we saw snow at the campsite.
Morning(Sunday) brought us great views of the surrounding mountains with a new dusting of snow and frost/snow on our gear.
I got in another soak with “nworker” Hank and when we got back people had started to break down the campsite for our trip home.
SurfandSnow and Travzilla took off first and another group left shortly after that.

Some of us that stayed a bit,…. brought out some guns and Tannerite to try out and when we finished shooting and blowing that up we broke into two groups with CKAYAKS taking a group up and over the mountains to the west for highway 34 and XKNUT and I taking the original soldiers meadow road back to Gerlach and Fernley.

A good time was had by all and we missed Danny Grooters on this trip. May be next time.

My birthday is April 6th. Going to try to sell "permission" to go on the trip as the greatest birthday present she can give me...

Put me down for the trip. Does Scotch refer to the drink? For me it would be vodka.

I have a few go to's that I enjoy, such as the Balvenie Doublewood 12yr but might go with something a bit different. Something Oregon. A black sheep among the traditional Scotches. Such as:

https://www.caskers.com/mccarthy-s-o...-malt-whiskey/

Made from peat-malted barley imported from Scotland, McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey would be called Scotch if Oregon were Scotland. The whiskey, smooth and peaty with a clean finish, was named the "Best Small Batch Whiskey in the World" by the Whisky Bible, and was named one of the ten best American whiskeys by Michael Jackson, author of the Malt Whiskey Companion.

Steve McCarthy, the master distiller at Clear Creek Distillery, purchases the finest malted barley at Port Ellen in Islay, Scotland, and imports it into the United States. Once the malted barley has been imported, it is milled, mashed and fermented into a craft beer by the Widmer Brothers, a Portland-based microbrewery. Then, the craft beer is hauled to McCarthy's craft distillery, where McCarthy distills it in a single pass through his Holstein copper-pot still. As a result of distilling the whiskey in one pass, McCarthy must make large cuts to the heads and tails of the distillate, but is able to preserve more of the flavor and character of the barley during distillation.

While most Scottish distilleries age malt whisky in used bourbon casks, McCarthy ages Oregon Single Malt in used sherry casks, which gives the whiskey a heavier body and more lush notes of apricots, cherries and blackberries. In addition, after its initial maturation in the sherry casks, McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt is double-barreled, or finished, in air-dried Oregon oak casks. This dual maturation process contributes unique tannins to the whiskey's flavor profile, and gives the whiskey hints of cinnamon, honey and oaky spices.

McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey is a marriage of Scottish ingredients together with American ingenuity. Pick up a bottle today!

Add me per IM. I imagine I can find a bottle or two of Scotch or a rye whiskey laying around here somewhere. I am also stopping by this place in a couple weeks. May bring a surprise from there.
