How-to: How to Adjust your Headlights

How to adjust your head lights for '05+ xterras.

Before performing aiming adjustment, make sure of the following:

Keep all tires inflated to correct pressure.
Place vehicle on level ground.
See that vehicle is unloaded (except for full-levels of coolant, engine oil and fuel, spare tire, jack and tools). Have the driver or equivalent weight placed in the driver seat.

Position vehicle 25 feet (7.6M) from a wall or something similar.

Low Beam and High Beam

Note: By regulation, no means for horizontal aim adjustment is provided from the factory, only vertical aim is adjustable.

Turn headlamp low beam on.

Use adjustment screw to perform aiming adjustment.

(Adjustment screw is located next to the top bracket closest to the fender on each side).

Cover the opposite lamp and ensure fog lamps, if equipped, are turned off.

Caution: DO NOT tighten adjustment screw beyond a torque of 1.67Nm (17kg-cm, 14.8 in-lb) or damage may occur.

Adjust beam pattern until cut off line (top edge of illumination area) is positioned at same height off ground as bulb center (on H-line). Measure cut-off line within distance A on H-line.

If vehicle front body has been reparied and/or the headlamp assembly has been replaced, check aiming. Use the aiming chart shown below.

Basic illuminating area for adjustment should be within range shown on the aiming chart. Adjust headlamps accordingly.

That is excellent Dan. If it is possible I would recommend being back 50 feet. I did it to my old 2000 and used both distances. At 50 feet I felt I had a better handle on where the headlights were shining.

If that works better then cool. That's actually straight out of the service manual.

When I did mine on the 2000, I googled for directiions but if it is out of the manual it should work well. I haven't searched the manual for that particular info.

Yeah someone on XF asked if anyone knew how to do it so I just looked it up on my laptop and copied it right over.

Get a kick out of this,
I was wondering why you posted that. Such new vehicles and all.
Until I did the lift and went for a ride shinning my lights into everyone's eyes. Now I can use these directions. Gotta wait to get the back done, if the Cops don't get me before that.

what would the ideal height off the ground at 25 and 50 feet be? I can't decipher it...

I went to do this last night and couldn't find the adjustment screw for the life of me!! also, is clockwise down or up?

FYI, this is not the same in the 2006. Well, at least in my 2006. There is a 8mm hex nut near the bottom of the headlight closest to the fender that has a metal washer that looks like it has teeth.

I decided I needed to adjust them when I could see people getting blinded in their rear view mirrors and when people would come up behind me after I passed them on the highway and they would put on their high beams on purpose. Some people...
