replacing catalytic converters in california

The check engine light warned went off at 82,000 miles so unfortunately they're out of warranty. I was thinking of having them replaced with aftermarket parts to save money but it seems aftermarket catalytic converters are illegal in California. Is the dealer my only option? I was quoted $800-$1200 for the repair. I was thinking of checking out local junkyards but I don't know if I'd be able to find the parts for a 2006 Nissan Xterra. Any advice?

You won't find any shop willing to install used cats so scratch the jy. I believe there are aftermarket cats that are CARB legal, I would check with an exhaust shop, they usually know quite a bit about exhaust systems

Find any 05+ in the boneyard and pull the entire exhaust, install yourself.

Thanks for the fast replies guys.

I was thinking of going to the junkyard to the stock parts, I wasn't expecting them to install it for me. Problem is, I don't know how to take them off or install them either.

I'll look into the California compliant catalytic converters. I've only looked online and the only ones I found were the ones illegal in California.

You can't buy complete exhaust systems in the junk yards in California. They will not sell you used catalytic converters. Welcome to California. Be sure to vote. Only you can save the three toed yellow belly sloth.
