metallic rattling sound during engine start

Very often during cold engine start, when engine revs up above 2K, there is a mattallic rattling sounds that comes out of the eingine. I suspect my timing chain is not tight enough. I talked to dealership, they said 'during engine start there is not oil for timing chain tensioners. but as soon as they are lubricated, it's lubricated'. or somthing like that. Bottom line is they said it's normal and nothing needs to b done.

Question - does that sound like a true/acceptable explanation to you? Or they simply do not want to perform a service on the truck.
Is it timing chain going out?

Thanks

Timing chains have a very unique sound when they are going bad. Usually it's not a sound that you can hear though without close listening and/or a scope. If a timing chain was loud enough to hear at start up, I am sure it would have broke by now or at the very least jump some teeth and throw your timing way out.

Now...what about a fan belt pulley? A loose heat shield? Have you tried opening the hood and figure out where it is coming from?

I know the two times my alternator went bad it made a rattling sound.

My timing chain tensioner was replaced under warrenty for exactly this; do a search, there is anouther longer post on this. Mine sounded like an aluminum rattle? I described it as "loudly banging two emply pop cans together!" No noises at all sense it was replaced.

this thing sounds like if you take a metallic chain and drag it on a metal pipe, kind of like that. it lasts for less than 1 second, uusally when engine revs up above 2K.

Is it like a buzzing/vibrating sound?

if it goes away after one second that is the lack of oil at start up, now if you hear a whining sound which accelerates while reving you need to get the two secondary timing chain tensioners replaced. warranty is 5yr/60,000 and the dealership should have no problem accepting the job as i do it all the time, it can take a day or two to do depending on what time you drop it off.

Hmm, this sounds similar to my new start-up noise. It only lasts about 3 or 5 secs tops and then goes away. Like a rapid clicking sound, not sure what you mean by metallic noise though.
